Nurturing Tomorrow's Innovators: Our Vision and Mission

Our Seeds Tomorrow Institute is designed to eliminate illiteracy and empower citizens to reach their full potential in this part of Liberia. To achieve that objective, OSTI will educate abandoned and exploited children, survivors of the Liberian civil war, as well as other unfortunate children.Civil war and poor infrastructure have crippled Liberia tremendously. Many businesses have fled, subtracting capital and expertise from the populace. These circumstances left Liberia, while rich with natural resources and lush forests and land, unable to thwart the advances of foreign ownership. Education is the first tool needed for rebuilding our country and combating an 85% unemployment rate. An absolute commitment and goal of OSTI is to develop an advocacy organization dedicated to building this important campus in post war rural Liberia through education.

    The impoverished countryside of Lofa County is being transformed into a hub for education, research, development, and innovation. It will be the home to OSTI’s agribusiness innovation center, focusing on how to grow crops and raise animals for local consumption and international export. The students first and foremost objective is learning for tomorrow to empower the improvement and sustainability of the local economy, implement sustainable development projects, and engage with the international community through exports. OSTI will seek and deploy innovative solutions to challenges in sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation, and natural resource management. Research at OSTI will be applicable to and actively supported by both faculty, students and outside supporters. OSTI will collaborate with institutions in the United States, such as Rotary International, to conduct collaborative research projects. Examples of research projects include: the search for a cure for agricultural diseases, identification of agricultural uses for the by-products such as ethanol production from sugarcane and the development of field guides for on-site water quality results.A primary objective for OSTI is to be one of the most recognizably sustainable campuses in Africa both in its facilities and with its independency from utilities produced off campus. Some of the features are:

  • Energy consumption on the campus will be based on using energy-efficient lighting, cooling systems, and other energy reducing design outcomes.
  • An on-site generator system will be augmented by a photovoltaic (PV) solar system. If costeffective, the solar system will be sized to be able to carry the OSTI’s normal loads to eliminate need for power from the local power grid. The PV system will include storage batteries so that they may be charged with excess power during the daylight for providing power to the facilities at night. Solar power, provided naturally by the sun, will collect more than enough energy to power the buildings during daylight hours, resulting in a net-positive energy outcome. The excess energy will be made available to the Lofa community
  • OSTI facilities will pursue create a systematic approach the recycling, transformation or reuse of solid domestic waste produced on campus as an example of its implementation elsewhere in Liberia.
  • OSTI will incorporate bio-digesters that collect wastewater from the cafeteria, student dorms, laboratories, and administration buildings, producing biogas to fuel burners in the OSTI’s cafeteria
  • Most of the vegetables, tubers, meats, and dairy products served in OSTI’s cafeteria will be grown organically and sustainably on OSTI’s farm.

OSTI’s curriculum is based on four formative areas designed to prepare students with the competencies required to respond to the needs of today’s world, including:

The teaching and learning process at OSTI will be dynamic and participatory, and OSTI professors serve as facilitators of learning. Our educational approach is based on two principals:

  • One of the primary academic and research approaches will be in Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture and Math (STEAM) programs which are designed to teach students to use different aspects of healthy living, community development, and economic development. Students, taught in the STEAM program first become highly skilled workers, develop their area of expertise, that leads to a more productive life. Our students are the ones leading the way to making advancements to improve health care, develop efficient domestic energy sources, preserve the environment, and grow the economy. The STEAM program requires a lot of planning. We are spending a lot of time finding the best educators to specialize in certain areas of expertise to building a successful program aimed at the most effective outcomes. There are a lot of countries that are leading the way in the creation of STEAM programs of which we are patterning our program. It all starts with the teacher being deeply knowledgeable on the specific field, so the student is confident in learning from the teacher in a certain subject. The graduate takes the learned experience to move forward with confidence is making a better life and community.

    OSTI students will be enrolled based on their academic and leadership potential, vocation, values, and social and environmental commitment. Most of the students will be from the local area but students from other parts of Liberia, particularly rural, will be recruited as part of the OSTI commitment to rebuilding Liberia.

    Commercial Agriculture and Economic Development Research and Application

    OTSI will seed innovative solutions to challenges in sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation, and healthy environments through its research programs. Research will be undertaken actively by both students and faculty. Research will primarily consist of research in agriculture, both personal and commercial crops; fisheries; and livestock. The research will also focus on finding cures for agriculture diseases, identification of by-products for agricultural utilization, ethanol production from sugarcane, and the development of field guides for on-site water quality results. OTSI will partner Liberia’s Central Agriculture Research institute (CARI) to enhance its capacity, research, and development as a partner and stakeholders to develop knowledge, information and technologies required to produce effective management of natural resources for agriculture and environment in Liberia. OTSI will seek answers to the perplexing agricultural challenges that impede production to find lasting solutions. The CARI strategy will provide the focus and guiding principles for achieving a clientoriented and demand-led research for development, with special emphasis on smallholder farmers and entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector which will greatly benefit Lofa County and OTSI. OTSI will take advantage of the CARI’s supportive services and the enabling environment to produce economic results. As part of its commitment to provide opportunities to the local community, particularly the young people who want to make a difference but lack the education and resources for an education to do so, OSTI will apply what it learns through research and operate a commercial enterprise and market its products to all of Liberia and beyond to other parts of the world. Profits will provide financial support of OSTI’s education program and operational expenses. Research and application will include farm-to-market transportation, familiarity with measurement and quality standards, type and use of storage facilities, and access to updated price and market information

    OTSI agriculture exports may include rice, peanuts, sugarcane, casava roots, bananas, plantains, mangos, avocados, palm oil, palm kernels, peppers, soap, dried fruits, cocoa beans, and rubber. For local sales, OSTI will produce rice, peppers, okra, onions, tomatoes, squash, peanuts, banana, mangos, and avocados which are in high demand throughout the country all year

    One keen area of interest is agricultural biologicals derived from naturally occurring microorganisms, plant extracts, beneficial insects or other organic matter primarily for their use in agriculture, i.e., biostimulants (plant growth/productivity enhancement products), biopesticides (plant protection or biocontrol products) and, biofertility (plant nutrition products). These products are in their infancy but will make a positive statement about OSTI’s commitment to research for the sake of our planet. In addition to agriculture products, OSTI will pursue other economic development opportunities such as home economics. The students as well as adults will attend classes after their work during the day to learn to sew, bake, and develop business skills and in turn start and operate their own businesses. The result will support the local populations but lead to the export of indigenous products

    Campus Master Plan

    In the northern part of Liberia in Lofa County, Zorzor District community near the village of Fissibu is the campus of Our Seeds Tomorrow Institute.

    The initial campus is 2.55 Square Kilometers (630 Acres). Essential to the success of OTSI IS a farm dedicated to agricultural and cattle production. OTSI facilities will be built in phases as the program grows.

This housing facility features seven spacious halls, each with 30 beds, as well as communal areas, including a comfortable sitting room, and a counselor's room. The design prioritizes the well-being, safety, and academic growth of the students.
